Wolves are 3-0; Saints are 4-1

In a marquee matchup in the opening week, Class 3A top-ranked Marion and No. 3 Cedar Rapids Xavier clash in non-conference play.

Marion is the defending state champions. Xavier was a semifinalist last season.

Here are the starting lineups:

Visiting Marion is 2-0. Jake Trca is not in the lineup due to injury. He could miss a couple weeks, apparently.

TOP OF THE 1ST: Cael Hodges leads off with a line drive back up the middle that ricocheted off pitcher Preston Lang. Hodges beat the throw. Myles Davis follows with a Texas Leaguer to shallow CF to move Hodges to second.

Frommelt with a pop out. Right fielder Andrew Hamlett comes in and calls off second baseman Maverick Miller to make the catch. Two on and one out.

Jaqson Tejada took two straight breaking balls for strikes and then sat on the third and lined it into CF. Hodges races home to make it 1-0. Davis to second.

Blackford chases a pitch in the rubber pellets(??). Technically, can’t call it dirt anymore. Anyway, ball gets away from Hoffmann. Davis and Tejada move up to third and second. Two on and two out.

Lang ends the top of first with a strikeout of Trey Franck. Marion leads, 1-0.

1 RUN, 3 HITS, 0 ERRORS, 2 LEFT ON BASE

BOTTOM OF 1ST: Will Hiserote hits a short chopper on the first pitch. Pitcher Payton Hodges fields it and throws to first for the first out. Hodges gets Andrew Hamlett to ground out to Myles Davis (6-3) and 2 up, 2 down for Marion.

Alex Neal grounds out to Davis. Saints go down in order (1-3, 6-3, 6-3).

After one complete, Marion leads, 1-0.

TOP OF 2ND: Bode Rahe leads off with a base hit to CF. Jumped on the first pitch and hit a liner that dropped in for a hit.

Payton Hodges moves him to second with a nice sac bunt to the right side. Lang fields it and gets the first out at first. Rahe to second.

Jake Miller follows with a flyout to CF. Brings up Cael Hodges with one on and two out.

Cael Hodges with a shot to third. Cooper Schenk is deep and makes a great grab. Hodges beats it out, but Schenk saved a run keeping it in the infield. Marion with runners on corners and Myles Davis up and two down.

Hodges steals second. Pitch was high and no throw.

Davis rips a single in the 5/6 hole on left side. Rahe and Hodges score. No cutoff. A throw comes into infield that’s off the mark and catcher fields it up the third base line. Davis with heads up playing, advancing to second on the throw.

Frommelt grounds out to third to end the inning. Drew Proskovec comes off the bag to grab the throw and has some nifty footwork to get the out before Frommelt got there.

2 R, 3 H, 0 E, 1 LOB; MARION LEADS, 3-0

BOTTOM OF 2ND: Brody Hoffmann is plunked by the first pitch. Courtesy runner Carlos Baez-Perez comes in for the Hoffmann, who is catching.

Baez-Perez takes off on a 1-2 count. Frommelt hits Davis, who tags out Baez-Perez. Caught stealing for the first out.

Caleb Even fouled off a couple and earned a base on ball. The caught stealing is larger now. Aidan Henry reaches on a fielder’s choice; Jake Miller fields chopper at second, hits Davis to get lead runner at second. One on and two out.

P. Hodges with a strikeout to end the inning.

0 R, 0 H, 0 E, 1 LOB; MARION LEADS, 3-0

TOP OF 3RD: Saints go to the bullpen. Eli Brecht comes in to relieve Lang, who moves to third. Lang allowed 3 runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts and no walks.

Tejada leads off for Marion. He grounds out to Lang at third. One down.

Blackford with a liner to third. It short-hops Lang, who tried to backhand it. It hops away into shallow LF/deep SS. Blackford reaches with one out and then moves to second on an ensuing balk.

Franck with a flyout to left. Blackford remains at second with two out. Rahe grounds out on a hopper to second (4-3) to end the inning.

0 R, 0 H, 0 E, 1 LOB; MARION LEADS, 3-0.

BOTTOM OF 3RD: Davis retires Drew Proskovec on a groundout to SS to start the inning. Davis is as smooth as they come.

Maverick Burger reaches on an error when third baseman’s Kaden Griffith’s throw is short and Boede Rahe doesn’t come up with it. Burger moves to second on a wild pitch.

Leadoff batter Will Hiserote up again. Saints have gone through their order without a hit. P. Hodges was down 3-0 to Hiserote and works all the way back to get the strikeout looking. Two down and Burger still at second.

Hamlett walks, giving the Saints runners on first and second with two outs. Alex Neal to the plate.

Neal inside outs one and drives it to RF. Neal with a double. Burger scores easily. Throw from the outfield goes to second, allowing Hamlett to score sliding in just ahead of the tag after relay from SS. Saints pull within one with Neal at second and two out.

That was Xavier’s first hit, by the way. Huge one to boot.

Hoffmann grounds out to third to end the inning, but Xavier on the board.

2 R, 1 H, 1 E, 1 LOB; MARION LEADS, 3-2

TOP OF 4TH: P. Hodges hit by pitch. Plunked in the helmet but appears OK, but Jasper Hancox comes in as a courtesy runner for the pitcher.

Miller with a sac bunt fielded by Lang. Proskovec with a scoop for the out. Hancox to second with one out. Leadoff man C. Hodges up.

Hodges reaches on E4. Hancox scores. Davis up with runner on first and one out. Davis with an F-8. One on and two out for Frommelt.

Neal with a nice play to his right at SS, throwing on the run to get Frommelt at first for the last out.

1 R, 0 H, 1 E, 1 LOB; MARION LEADS, 4-2.

BOTTOM OF 4TH: Xavier has Even, Henry and Lang due up.

Even reaches on an error by Davis at SS. Even to second on Aidan Henry’s sac bunt (1-3). One down.

Lang fouled off about three 2-strike pitches and worked the count full. P. Hodges freezes him with a breaking ball for strike 3. Two down and a runner on second.

Proskovec with a slow hopper to the right side. Miller was jockeying to hold runner on second. He had to come a long way and got to it and rushed an errant throw. Even scored. Proskovec to second. 4-3 Marion.

Burger with a grounder up the middle, hits the second base bag and pops up. Davis grabs it but Burger beats it. Throw was a little off the mark. Proskovec to third. Two down and the top of the order up.

Hiserote walks to load the bases for Hamlett. Two down.

Trey Franck with a running grab in LCF to end the inning.

1 R, 1 H, 2 E, 3 LOB; MARION LEADS, 4-3.

TOP OF 5TH: Marion has Tejada, Blackford and Franck due up.

Tejada hits a hopper to third. Lang grabs it and the long throw comes up short. Proskovec can’t come up with it. Tejada reaches with an infield single.

Blackford sends one into RF. Hamlett with a running catch, being carried to the line. Similar to Franck’s catch to end the fourth.

Brecht gets Franck to pop out in foul territory to third baseman Lang. Two out and runner on first.

Rahe grounds out to second to end the inning.

0 R, 1 H, 0 E, 1 LOB; MARION LEADS, 4-3

BOTTOM OF 5th: Xavier has 3-4-5 up, which is Neal, Hoffmann and Even.

Neal walks to lead off the inning.

Hoffmann with a line drive to CF. Almost looked like Franck had a beat on it, coming in, but he pulled up and fielded it on the hop. Smart play. If that skips by him, game is probably tied with the go-ahead run in scoring position. Two on, none out.

Even with a sac bunt to the right side. P. Hodges fields it for the 1-3 put out. Runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Aidan Henry up for Xavier.

Henry rips a liner to RF. Tejada with the catch. Neal tags up and scores. Heck of a throw from Tejada. Made it closer than expected. Courtesy runner Baez-Perez tags and goes to third. Game is tied, 4-4.

Trey Franck with another running grab. This time in shallow RCF, getting it with a bit of a dive to end it.

1 R, 1 H, 0 E, 1 LOB; GAME TIED, 4-4

TOP OF 6TH: Marion has 8-9-1 up with P. Hodges, Miller and C. Hodges.

P. Hodges grounds out to third baseman Lang. One down. Miller follows with a groundout to SS Neal. Two up, two down.

Cael Hodges has been living on infield balls. This time he ropes one down the left-field line and to the fence. C. Hodges with a double.

Davis with a liner under the glove of Burger, going to his right up the middle, at second. C. Hodges scores.

Frommelt with a double to deep RF. Davis races around the bases to score from first. Marion back in control, 6-4.

Xavier Coach Dan Halter calls time and meets at the mound. Huge two-out rally for Marion to regain the lead.

Brecht faces Tejada with a runner on second and two out. Tejada grounds out to Neal at SS to end the frame.

2 R, 3 H, 0 E, 1 LOB; MARION LEADS, 6-4

BOTTOM OF 6TH: Marion goes to Seth Blackford in relief. Payton Hodges threw five innings, allowing four runs on two hits with three strikeouts. P. Hodges now at 3B.

Saints have 8-9-1 up against Blackford. Proskovec, Burger, Hiserote. Proskovec grounds out to SS Davis for first out.

Blackford strikes out Burger and Hiserote grounds out to second (4-3). Blackford with a 1-2-3 inning.

0 R, 0 H, 0 E, 0 LOB; MARION LEADS, 6-4

TOP OF 7TH: Caleb Even on to pitch. Brecht with a strong relief performance, going five innings, giving up three runs on five hits.

Blackford groundsout to SS Neal for the first out. Franck reaches on a walk to give the Wolves a runner with one out. Franck steals second.

Rahe with a shot down the line. It gets to the LF fence. Franck scores easily and Rahe slides into second without a play. Marion extends lead to 7-4.

P. Hodges plunked for the second time tonight. Marion with two on and one out.

Jake Miller with a sac bunt. Even looked to go to third for the force and lost the handle. Everyone safe. C. Hodges with a hard grounder to third. Saints get the force at home. Bases loaded and two out with Davis up for the Wolves.

Even strikes out Davis to end the inning, but Marion adds a big insurance run.

1 R, 1 H, 1 E, 3 LOB; MARION LEADS, 7-4

BOTTOM OF 7TH: Saints down to last at-bat. They have 2-3-4 (Hamlett, Neal, Hoffmann) up in the order.

Hamlett with a leadoff single, lining a shot into CF. Neal and Hoffmann with back-to-back walks to load the bases with none out. Tying run is on first, bringing up the winning run in Caleb Even at the plate.

Even draws a walk. That’s three in a row. Hamlett scores. Bases loaded with none out. Marion Coach Steve Fish brings in left-handed freshman Grayson Kirsch to relieve Blackford. Man, what a pressure situation to bring in a freshman, but an early-season learning experience. That’s why you have a game like this in the first week. Great experience and reps.

Aidan Henry up now for Xavier. Henry rips a single to CF. Neal scores to make it 7-6 Marion. Bases loaded and none out. Lang up for Xavier.

Lang with a flyball to LF. Carlos Baez-Perez tags and scores to tie the game, 7-7. Saints still have runners on 1st and 2nd and one out.

Proskovec up. Proskovec strikes out looking. Andy Kram now up with two out and two on. Tied up.

Kram has worked the count full. Ball 3 was a wild pitch that moved runners to second and third. But, Kirsch gets Kram to swing at strike 3 in the rubber pellets. Frommelt with the tag to end the inning.

3 R, 2 H, 0 E, 2 LOB; TIED 7-7

TOP OF 8TH: Marion has 3-4-5 (Frommelt, Tejada, Kirsch) due up.

Frommelt with a flyout to RF. Even gets Tejada to strike out looking. Kirsch now batting because he came in to pitch in the seventh, relieving the previous DH Blackford.

Kirsch swings at strike 3 but the ball gets by Brody Hoffmann and goes to the backstop. Kirsch reaches on a dropped third strike. Jasper Hancox as a courtesy runner.

Franck with a groundball to SS Neal, who flips to second (Cooper Schenk who re-entered after starting the game at 3B) for force out to end the inning.

0 R, 0 H, 0 E, 1 LOB; TIED 7-7

BOTTOM OF 8TH: Saints have the top of the order up (Hiserote, Hamlett, Neal).

Hiserote retired on an F-8. Brings up Hamlett, who flies out to LF. Two up, two down.

Saints go down in order. Neal flies out to RF.

Kirsch has been impressive since giving up an RBI single to the first batter he faced. Retired six straight after that.

0 R, 0 H, 0 E, 0 LOB; TIED 7-7

TOP OF 9TH: Marion has 7-8-9 (Rahe, P. Hodges, Miller) up to start.

Rahe with a hopper to the mound and it’s misplayed. Scored a hit but it was an error. You always try to forgive a pitcher on fielding scores, but that’s a miscue.

Rahe to second on a passed ball. P. Hodges walks, making it runners on 1st and 2nd with none out. Xavier Coach Dan Halter to the mound.

Miller sac bunt fielded by Hoffmann and got the out at first. Rahe moves to 3rd and P. Hodges to 2nd. Jasper Hancox comes in as an official entry this time, pinch-running for P. Hodges.

C. Hodges with a groundout to SS. Neal looked home but made the smart play, holding Hancox at second and getting the second out at first. Marion takes an 8-7 lead.

An odd 1-4-3 groundout when Davis his a shot off the leg of Even. Inning ends with Marion back on top.

BOTTOM OF 9TH: Xavier has 4-5-6 (Hoffmann, Even, Henry) due up.

Hoffmann grounds out to SS Davis for the first out. That’s seven straight retired for Kirsch.

Kirsch gets a strikeout against Even for the second out. Xavier down to its last out. Kirsch strikes out Henry looking to end it. Kirsch, a freshman, retired the last nine batters after coming in with the bases loaded and none out with a 7-5 lead. Gave up an RBI single and a sac fly against the first two batters he faced. Kirsch ended the seventh and ninth with two strikeouts.
