A retired scientist from Cardiff has designed a game that is played electronically on your smartphone while you wander around the popular Cardiff beauty spot, Roath Park Lake and Botanical gardens.

Geocaching Adventure Lab is an electronic treasure hunt played on a smartphone using a free app. The app guides players through the process of finding clues, solving puzzles, and completing adventures one location at a time.

There are generally multiple locations to visit and answer a question. If you enter the correct answer you will hear a satisfying jingle.

63-year-old, Ted Richards is chairman of the Roath Local History Society and an experienced geocacher, when he was awarded the opportunity to set an Adventure Lab he immediately thought of Roath Park Lake and the Botanic Garden.

Ted from Penylan in Cardiff, said: "Roath Park is one of Cardiff's top attractions and the history of it interests me so I was able to weave a bit of that into the questions too.

"I thought of using the Scott Memorial Lighthouse as one of the questions but thought better of it as the writing on the plaque there is just a bit too challenging to read sometimes.

"Instead, I take people on a circular walk around the lake and botanic garden and include stops at the conservatory, playground, boathouse, and information boards."

Unlike other cache types which involve finding a container, Adventure Lab Caches are virtual, can be indoors and do not require a minimum distance to other geocaches, allowing creators to innovate and test new ideas to make geocaching even more fun.

Ted added: "It has been lovely to see people getting out there and attempting the Roath Park Lake adventure lab cache and providing their feedback. I am hoping to be awarded another opportunity to set an Adventure Lab cache and already have a couple of ideas in mind as to where I could base them".
